Masonry mortar: proportions and consumption

A classic masonry mix is cement and sand at 1:4 with water to a plastic consistency. Lime or a plasticiser improves workability.

About 0.25 m³ of mortar goes into 1 m³ of brickwork. Mix only what you can lay in 1–2 hours before it starts to set.
