Wall insulation: comparing materials

Mineral wool breathes and is non-combustible but dislikes moisture. Foam is cheap and light but flammable. Extruded polystyrene is strong and moisture-resistant, used at the plinth.

The choice depends on the wall and budget. For a rendered façade, dense mineral wool or XPS is common, always with a vapour barrier inside.
